A
Great and Terrible Beauty .
Libba Bray. Delacorte Books for Young Readers. 2003.
Book review by Tracey
A friend recommended this book to me several months ago after listening
to me go on and on about the Twilight series. It has taken me this long
to acquire and read the story, the first of a series. I really enjoyed
the themes addressed in this book. I am drawn to Victoriana, who has powers
of the mind and is the downtrodden female character. I found Ms. Bray’s
writing to have a good flow in my mind, which made it easy to envision
the story as it was read. The main character, Gemma, has grown up in India.
The story begins just as she is turning sixteen. She hates everything
around her and wishes to live in England where she imagines everything
is better. She gets her wish, but how she does it is a good part of the
story, so I won’t spoil it. This story is full of happenings that
make the reader realize how choices can alter ones’ life forever.
As I am a full believer in making choices to enhance my life rather than
harming it, I definitely appreciated this vein running throughout. It
also explores the power of self (young girls in this instance) to change
the course of events that directly affect us all.
