Charleston. Alexandra Ripley. Avon Books. 1982 (reissue).

Book review by Tracey
This book was published in 1981. I picked it up at a yard sale, and it sat in my library for at least a year before I got around to reading it. I enjoyed it very much. It has all the elements a good book should have. It is a family saga spanning four generations of the southern elite of Charleston. It begins during the Civil War and continues on through the Restoration. There is a lot of emotion, both good and bad, as can be expected from a family saga. I especially liked the descriptions of the proper manners and customs associated with the privileged families of this particular time and place. Read it to learn something about the South during this time period, or to gain the author’s insight into the changing relationships between black and white people after the slaves were freed.
