The
Last Lecture .
Randy Pausch with Jeffrey Zaslow. Hyperion. New York, New York. 2008.
Book review by Jane
Randy Pausch did a lecture during a battle he had with a terminal cancer.
I hadn't heard the term used before, but apparently, professors are often
invited to give last lectures to share their valuable memories. Randy
Pausch chose to do the talk in part as a way to influence his own children.
They would lose their father very young. The book was a companion to the
lecture that Randy Pausch gave. The lecture was titled “Achieving
Your Childhood Dreams”. The lecture does not deep delve into the
recesses of what should a person do during their last-dying days. Instead,
he talks about his childhood dreams and how he achieved them, and then
how he was able to help others achieve their childhood dreams. This process
sometimes required him to come into what he called brick walls, which
he said were only there to separate him from others who did not want the
dream as much as he did. It was true that he was able to achieve things
by perseverance. He also found that the fundamentals were important to
learn, and learned this when he was very young. This revelation came from
trying to achieve his dream of playing for the NFL. He didn't achieve
this dream, but learned about the importance of fundamentals, and applied
it to other areas of his life. He said if you are living the right way,
your dreams will come to you. I think he is right. It does seem to be
true. Of course, it is reality, and we don't always get to have what we
want. But dreaming can make a life richer.
