We hope you will find at least a book or two to read from these selections. |
The Simulacra Book review by Joel This is my first foray into Philip K. Dick territory. I had heard of him for a long time but never picked up any of his books. I heard his work was really on the edge and hallucinatory at times. And that if you read one of his books you'd have to go underground and live the rest of your life as a hermit, eating frogs and gelatinous gutter snipes. I don't know if any of that is true. I haven't tripped on my beard, and frogs taste like chicken, but not in Jello. This book was an interesting look at an alternate Earth in the mid-21st century. Having written the story in 1964, it is fun to see some predictions for the near future; for example, smoking cigarettes was illegal but everyone smoked cigars, and a few smoked illegal cigarettes. Mars was a colony of Earth where you could emigrate to via the jalopy jungle lots. If you were lonely--either on Mars or Earth--you could buy a simulated family to emigrate with you. There is a good send up of politics as well in this book. In fact, it is the crux of the story. But I don't want to spoil it for you. It is a good starter book. I will definitely be getting more of Philip K. Dick's books. Joel. Search our site:
